Skin's epidermis consists of two layers: the germinative layer (sometimes called the "living" epidermis) and the horny layer. UVA rays can go all the way through the skin's protective epidermis to the dermis, where blood vessels and nerves are found. About five percent of the cells in your epidermis are special cells called melanocytes. A small quantity of sunlight is needed to manufacture vitamin D.
