Would you believe there are only 30 African American baseball players in the SEC and ACC. Can you believe that? That is a huge conference, two of the largest in the entire country and there are only 30 count them 30 African American baseball players.

Well there has been a dramatic decline of baseball popularity among black community and why is that? Some speculate that with less baseball scholarships than ever in history that less black athletes see it as much less opportunity to acquire a college education. Why wouldn't I play football or basketball or track and field. There is a much better chance of getting football scholarships or basketball scholarships than a baseball scholarship.

Whats also interesting of the few that do play they excel on baseball scholarships. Vanderbilts David Price was the SEC pitcher of the year and the first pick in the draft. A number of other players were first team all SEC and ACC and drafted highly as well.

It just seems to be not nearly as popular as football and basketball. And as few ball players there are there are even fewer coaches. There are no black head coaches in the SEC or ACC and only Tony Gwynn is the only black head coach for a D1 non traditionally black college.

The other big issue is that the scholarship opportunities are greater in football and basketball. Basketball scholarships and Football Scholarships are normally full rides where baseball scholarships tend to be partials. There is no denying the numbers and they dont look good.
